On 22 May, we organized an excursion to Litomyšl for our international students and employees.

We visited Litomyšl Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we explored its rich history and unique Renaissance architecture. The program also included a visit to the Faculty of Restoration of the 51�Թ��, where we gained insight into conservation and restoration practices.

Researchers at the 51�Թ�� have developed unique sensors that can significantly extend the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries and advance the development of so-called smart batteries. In the future, the sensors will be able to detect problems on their own and, thanks to advanced features, respond to them as they arise. The university is also seeking international patent protection for these sensors.

A team from the Faculty of Chemical Technology is participating in the development as part of the international Horizon Europe project – Salamander – that brings together international scientific expertise in battery research. Scientists in Pardubice play a key role in the project – they are focused on developing sensors to monitor temperature, state of health (SOH), and other parameters measured directly inside the battery.

“As part of the project, we have developed new types and designs of sensors that are extremely sensitive and capable of measuring even very small changes in temperature and other parameters directly inside the battery,” says Tomáš Syrový, head of the Pardubice team from the Faculty of Chemical Technology at the 51�Թ��, adding: “Our research brings science closer to the development of a new generation of smart batteries that will find applications in areas such as electric mobility, energy, and modern electronics.”

The developed printed thin-film sensors can detect changes in electrode temperature at the hundredths-of-a-degree Celsius level, thanks to their placement both inside the cell and on the electrode surfaces. This is unattainable for conventional sensors located outside the battery. It is this precise data that enables detailed monitoring of processes inside the cell and paves the way for the use of advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence for predictive protection and optimisation of battery operation. The scientists in Pardubice also devoted a significant portion of their research to ensuring the long-term durability of the sensors, which must function reliably in the chemically aggressive environment inside the battery.

Sensitive and reliable sensors are an essential component of the new generation of smart batteries. Data from sensors and advanced algorithms enable early identification of potential issues, allowing activation of self-healing mechanisms for the batteries, which are also being developed as part of the project. Activating these mechanisms will significantly extend the lifespan of batteries and enhance safety during use.

The university has already filed patent applications for selected technologies in the EU and other countries, with the 51�Թ�� as the primary inventor.

The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, and his wife Eva will visit the 51�Թ�� for the first time.

Next Wednesday, the President and Eva Pavlová will meet with the University Executive Board, and the President will then take part in a discussion with students in the Arnošt z Pardubic auditorium. The First Lady, Eva Pavlová, will also visit selected research facilities at the university.

We warmly invite all our students to this special event in the Arnošt z Pardubic auditorium.

Participation in the discussion, which is reserved exclusively for 51�Թ�� students, requires registration. A registration link and further information will be sent to students via their university email accounts. Registration will open tomorrow, on Thursday, 16 April 2026 at 10:00, via the internal system.

The discussion will be held in Czech without interpretation. The 51�Թ�� will also invite its staff and the public to watch the event via an online livestream, available on the university website (upce.cz) and on its social media channels.

The auditorium, including the University Gallery (GU), will be closed to the public throughout the day for security reasons.

The 51�Թ�� will host a gathering of leading healthcare experts from the Czech Republic and abroad. The MEKON conference of global leaders in healthcare is organised by the Faculty of Health Studies at the 51�Թ�� (UPCE) in cooperation with the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Catholic University in Ružomberok and the Department of Nursing at the State University of Applied Sciences in Piła, Poland.

The conference Quality of Care and Its Future Prospects, subtitled “Health Promotion and Education,” will begin on Wednesday, 15^th April, in the university auditorium. This professional event is aimed at academics, researchers, students, and experts and professionals working across multiple disciplines in patient and client care. Interested parties from all related fields are also invited.

Among the most notable guests at this year’s event is Prof. Qing Li, MD, Ph.D., from Nippon Medical School in Tokyo. Professor Li is a world-renowned expert in forest medicine and immunology. His research has long focused on the impact of the natural environment on human health, and he is the author of internationally acclaimed publications. His book Shinrin-yoku has been translated into 26 languages, and he is also the author of Forest Bathing, which became a bestseller in the United States.

“I view the arrival of this distinguished guest from Japan as a unique opportunity to bring attention in the Czech Republic to a topic that is crucial for the future of healthcare. Preventive approaches inspired by scientific research in forest medicine yield demonstrable and measurable results in mental health care, stress management, immunity boosting, and recovery support, particularly for cancer patients. This is an approach that combines scientific knowledge with a holistic view of the human being and has the potential to significantly enrich our healthcare practice,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Health Studies at UPCE, Doc. RNDr. ThLic. Karel Sládek, Ph.D., MBA.

The invited speakers will include Alice Strnadová, M.A., Ph.D., Chief Nurse of the Czech Republic; representatives of the Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic (ÚZIS), Miloslav Klugar, Ph.D., and Jitka Jírová, Ph.D.; and, from abroad, Prof. Vlastimil Kozoň, Vice-Rector of St. Elizabeth University of Health and Social Work in Bratislava, Assoc. Prof. Daniela Schoberer from the Medical University of Graz in Austria, and Assoc. Prof. Dominika Vrbnjak from the University of Maribor in Slovenia.

“Hosting the ninth edition of this conference builds on our long-standing tradition of translating the latest findings into practice, disseminating research results, and successfully promoting the faculty. We now have more than 220 participants from a total of eight countries registered for the conference,” added Mgr. Vít Blanař, Ph.D., Vice Dean for Research and Development at the Faculty of Health Studies, UPCE.

Scientists from the 51�Թ�� (UPCE) are refining a method capable of detecting pancreatic cancer from a simple blood sample. Their latest findings have been published in the journal Communications Medicine. The study was conducted by a team of analytical chemists led by Professor Michal Holčapek from the Faculty of Chemical Technology.

The researchers have long focused on lipid analysis and its application in detecting various types of cancer. A series of samples was analysed in cooperation with Lipidica, a joint venture established by the 51�Թ�� and the holding company FONS JK Group.

The new results appear in Communications Medicine, part of the prestigious Nature Portfolio (https://doi.org/10.1038/s43856-026-01445-5).

The research team demonstrates that pancreatic cancer can be detected using what is currently a unique lipidomic approach based solely on a blood test. This represents a significant step forward in non-invasive diagnostics. The test distinguishes patients from healthy individuals with high accuracy and has now been shown to remain reliable even in individuals at increased risk of developing the disease.

“This is a crucial finding. Our screening method can very accurately distinguish between patients and individuals at high risk of developing pancreatic cancer. This means that the method could also be applied to high-risk groups,” said Professor Michal Holčapek from the Faculty of Chemical Technology at the 51�Թ��.

Individuals at increased risk of pancreatic cancer represent the primary target group for screening. While the lifetime risk of developing pancreatic cancer in the general population is approximately 1.5 per cent, it exceeds 5 per cent among high-risk individuals. Major risk factors include genetic predisposition and a family history of the disease.

The blood test developed on the basis of research at the 51�Թ�� could be introduced following the successful completion of clinical validation. Validation is currently under way, with Lipidica collaborating with 16 hospitals and specialised centres across the Czech Republic.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive malignancies. Statistics indicate that only 13 per cent of patients survive five years after diagnosis. The poor prognosis is largely due to the lack of reliable tools for early detection. A non-invasive blood test with high sensitivity and specificity could therefore help improve treatment outcomes in the future.

Professor Holčapek’s research team has been engaged in lipid analysis for more than twenty-five years. In recent years, the team’s work has appeared repeatedly in prestigious scientific journals such as Nature Metabolism and Nature Communications. According to the Web of Science database, the team’s 2022 publication – which first described the possibility of early detection of pancreatic cancer using a lipidomic test – ranks among the most cited articles in the fields of biology and biochemistry.
